Have you ever been to a business networking event, and run into someone that wants to try to sell you their product or service on the spot? They avoid all networking etiquette, and go right for the jugular. It’s all about the sale for them, and never about the relationship. And what happens 100%? They fail.
I see the same thing happening on LinkedIn all the time. Someone connects with you, but they don’t really “connect.” They don’t send a message thanking you for the connection. They don’t post things that would interest you (such as important business articles, interesting tips, etc), but they do post commercials about their business. Nonstop.
You should treat LinkedIn like it’s the world’s biggest networking event! Get to know your connections. Find out who they are. Ask them how you can help them. Discover who their target market is, and see if you have any connections you can refer to them. In other words…be a professional networker!
Remember Zig Ziglar’s old saying? “You can have everything in life you want as long as you help enough others get what they want?” Use this maxim with your LinkedIn connections, and it will reap rewards!
Here are a few simple tips that can really boost your LinkedIn experience:
- Post Daily: Stay in front of your connections every day.
- Post Interesting Material: What would YOU like to see every day? Find great content that all will love.
- Use the 80/20 Rule: 80% of your posts should be of general interest, 20% about your business.
- Really Connect: Make messages personal, not the default LinkedIn message. Then Thank them after the connection is made.
LinkedIn is an amazing way to connect with people who want to do business with you, or who want to refer others to you, so don’t blow it!
