Well, it would seem by the hashtags I run into daily, MOST don’t know the answer to that!
The simple answer is: A hashtag is used as a topic. It gives you the ability to click on it, and see what everyone else is posting using that hashtag. It can be a powerful marketing tool.
I will give a couple pieces of advice for hashtag users…
- Only Use Existing Twitter Hashtags to Add to The Conversation. It’s really bad etiquette to post about one thing, and hashtag about another (such as for self-promotion)
- If you’re using a hashtag for marketing, use it in all of your social venues (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc)
- Use language everyone can understand when choosing a hashtag. Industry-only lingo are often a bad choice (unless that’s the crowd you’re aiming for).
So, hashtag away! But make sure it makes sense to!
