Take for instance the topic of websites. I could complain about websites that take too long to load. Or about sites that are more “ads” than “useful info.” Or about the ones that take me to different sites in the same tab, forcing me to backspace if I want to return to their site. But I won’t; my complaint today is about the simplicity of sites…or, the lack thereof!
A rule of thumb in the website business is that if it takes someone more than two clicks to get to what they need on your site, then they will probably just leave. And I fall into that category of impatient web surfers!
When I hit a site, I want to be easily guided to the info/page I need. I want clear menus, concise links, and buttons that do what they say! When I go to a restaurants site, I want to see their contact info on the Home Page, and I want an easily identifiable link to their menu…it’s that simple! And, I want people to feel the same way when they hit my site; I want them to get the info they need, and I want them to be able to navigate the site like a pro, even if it’s their first time there.
So my question to you is this: How many clicks does someone go through to get the info they need on your site? How simple is your site to navigate? Eye-popping graphics and a site that “wows” is great, but it’s also useless if your visitor can’t get what they need.
Visit your own website, and try to think like a first-time visitor…what do you think of it?
